The Spin Kings: Slow Bowlers Who Ruled a Batter's Game
Chahal, Narine, Rashid, Ashwin, Harbhajan and Kumble. How spinners thrived in the league built for big hitting.

The IPL was supposed to be a batter's league: short boundaries, flat pitches and a format built for sixes. Yet some of its greatest players have been spinners, bowlers who take the pace off the ball and make hitters come to them. Here are six who mattered most.
Yuzvendra Chahal: the wicket machine
No bowler has taken more IPL wickets than Chahal. The leg-spinner became a star at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, bowling fearlessly at the short Chinnaswamy boundaries, then won the Purple Cap with Rajasthan Royals in 2022, a season that included a hat-trick against Kolkata. In 2024 he became the first bowler to reach 200 IPL wickets, and in 2025 Punjab Kings bought him for ₹18 crore.
Sunil Narine: the mystery that became a legend
Narine has played his entire IPL career for Kolkata Knight Riders, starting in 2012, when his hard-to-read variations made him the season's Most Valuable Player. He won that award again in 2018 and in 2024, the only man to win it three times. By then he had become an explosive opening batter too, with a hundred against Rajasthan, and he won his third title with KKR.
Rashid Khan: the wicket-taking wall
The Afghan leg-spinner joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017 as a teenager and quickly became one of the hardest bowlers in the world to score off. He moved to Gujarat Titans for their first season in 2022 and won the title straight away. In 2023 he took a hat-trick against Kolkata.

R Ashwin: the thinker
Ashwin began with his home team, Chennai Super Kings, and won the title with them in 2010 and 2011. He later captained Kings XI Punjab, played for Delhi and Rajasthan, and returned to Chennai for 2025 before retiring from the IPL in August 2025. Few bowlers have studied the game as closely, and he was never afraid to try something new, including the run-out of Jos Buttler at the non-striker's end in 2019 that started a long debate.
Harbhajan Singh: the Mumbai spinner
Harbhajan was one of Mumbai Indians' first stars and was part of their title wins in 2013, 2015 and 2017. He then moved to Chennai and won a fourth title with them in 2018.
Anil Kumble: the early classic
In the second season, played in South Africa in 2009, the former India captain took 5 wickets for 5 runs against Rajasthan Royals in Cape Town, still one of the most famous spells in IPL history. As RCB captain he then led the team to the 2009 final.

Why spin still works in a batter's league
- Pace off the ball. Big hitters want the ball coming onto the bat. Slow bowling makes them generate all the power themselves.
- The middle overs. With five fielders allowed on the boundary after the powerplay, a good spinner can choke the scoring and force mistakes.
- Variety. Googlies, carrom balls and arm balls mean batters can never be sure what is coming next.
And one more name worth knowing: Amit Mishra, the leg-spinner who took three IPL hat-tricks, more than anyone else.
Stats in this chapter are correct to the end of the 2025 IPL season.
